Indigenous Worldview: Mythology & Storytelling

Storytelling & Oral History are significant pieces of Indigenous Tradition and History and there is a remarkable difference between telling stories & Indigenous Storytelling. Not merely a pastime for entertainment, these stories have deep meaning and valuable lessons.

Three categories most commonly implemented in Indigenous Storytelling are stories of Creation, Moral Teachings and Historical events. Many stories are considered so sacred that they are not spoken of outside of tribes, clans and families.

Through this presentation, experience Julia telling & acting out some of the Adaawak (Traditional Stories only told by the Nisga'a People) that have been passed down through many generations since time immemorial.
Learn why Traditional Indigenous stories are considered sacred and about the lessons we all learn regarding virtues from the examples we hear about in these legends.

Traditional Teachings

The teachings of the values and virtues throughout Indigenous cultures are considered of the greatest importance.

The Seven Grandfather Teachings is a clear and concise way of explaining, describing and teaching the virtues held in such high regard.

What do these virtues teach us, why are they important to our lives, how can we emulate these values and live them out authentically in our lives and how do they ultimately benefit us?

Working Toward Reconciliation

There are many difficult issues that have faced the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, some of these issues have culminated into tragic circumstances such as the Residential Schools and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

The past few years have introduced ideas and plans to try to reconcile communities when it comes to these issues but it is a long and laborious road to travel on.

What are the steps that have been taken so far toward Reconciliation? What are some of the steps we need to take to continue forward to Reconciliation between the Canadian Government, Churches and Indigenous Peoples? What does true Reconciliation look like for the Canadian non-indigenous communities and the Indigenous Peoples?
